My close encounter with Ewa Sonnet, or a dream come true
If someone told me on that Saturday morning, that in the afternoon, after crossing the border between Slovakia and Hungary, heading for the Polish town of Jastrzębie Zdrój, I was going to listen to Fekete Pákó's songs (an absolutely talentless singer from Nigeria come to Hungary to sing Hungarian folk songs in his terrible voice), I'm absolutely sure I would have laughed in his/her face. But that's exactly what all four of us did: Claudia my younger sister, Marci our Hungarian Ewa Sonnet Fanclub member and very good friend of mine, Laci the interpreter, and myself. That was our desperate attempt to fight boredom.
Thanks to GPS and other gadgets of modern technology, despite a few smaller mishaps we arrived at the Presing Club disco in Jastrzębie Zdrój, a small town in south of Poland, near Rybnik, Ewa's hometown, around 8 o'clock in the evening. After having appeased our hunger at a place we were really familiar with (i.e. McDonald's) we headed for the club at about 9 o'clock. Inside we were in for our first real surprise, because we called Phill, Ewa's manager, and he told us, that they knew about us and all we had to do was tell an organiser who we were and they would take care of us. We picked someone who looked like a member of the event staff (a security guard) and told him what the situation was. "Ah, so you are the Hungarians? Then come with me. There is a table for four reserved for you upstairs" he replied. We all looked at each other thinking: "They were really expecting us here!"
We had an excellent view of the stage from our table, but I knew instantly, that I was going to watch the show not from there, but from the front row. As Ewa's performance was supposed to begin at midnight, at 10 minutes before twelve I got going, fighting my way across the crowd like a mother elephant trying to save her baby, so that I could get to the front row. I managed to get as far as the barrier in front of the stage by the time the DJ announced, that at the show would start 0:15. At 0:10 I could see some movement on the right, and some big guys the size of a cupboard appeared. One could hardly notice a small person wearing a sort of monk's frock walking among them. She passed me almost at an arm's reach, I could clearly see her face, but I could hardly believe it was really her. The show itself turned out to be quite spectacular, I cannot describe it with words, so I'll let the videos give you an impression. However, it is worth emphasizing Ewa's professionalism, as the local equipment played tricks on her twice: first her microphone refused to work for a few seconds then the music stopped playing for a short while, but Ewa bridged the gaps confidently and continued her performance. I was just standing there, 3 or 4 metres from the stage and watching her. I couldn't believe it was actually she whom I saw.
The show finished at about 1:20 and I fought my way back to our table, to find a relatively quiet place with my friend, Laci, so that we could call the manager and ask him what we should do next. That place happened to be the upstairs toilet of the disco. We called Phil but there was no answer. A few minutes later we tried again, but couldn't get through. We left a message in his voicemail box, and were waiting for him to call us back. Half an hour passed, but nothing happened. We made several more attempts without success. We waited another thirty minutes. Although our time was running out, as my friend Marci had to go to work on Sunday at 11am, I did not want to give up, since they knew we were there. They couldn't have forgotten about us. I decided I was not leaving without talking to Ewa. I was ready to be left there even if I had to find my own way home, but I was determined to talk to Ewa somehow. That hour was an experience I would not even want my enemies to endure. At around half past two we decided to go outside hoping we might get hold of them. On our way out Laci asked the security guard who had helped us earlier if Ewa had already left. "No, they are upstairs", the guy replied. "Haven't you met her yet? Come with me, I'll take you to her." And so he did. Ewa and her family were sitting around a large table, I saw her parents and her younger sister (she is also more beautiful in life than in the pictures). Phill the manager noticed us first, and told us with a gesture that he would be with us in a minute. He did come very soon and asked us to forgive him, because he had left his phone in its coat in the dressing room. We told him we would like to escape to a smaller room, where it was not so noisy. (There was incredible rumbling noise in the disco, the whole building was actually shaking because of the high volume.) And Ewa arrived as well. As far as I could see in the intense flashing lights, she was smiling, then she shook hands with each of us. I suppose she introduced herself, but I could not hear a single word, not that it was necessary. The strangest thing about her was how tiny her hands were, like those of a child. We went higher upstairs and ended up in a small dressing room. Even there it was very noisy, we had to shout so that we could understand each other. However, the room was lighter and there were no flashing lights, so I had a chance to take a better look at Ewa. Her clothes were completely ordinary, not provocative or eye-catching, but reserved. But I was absolutely captivated by her personality. She had some very special, strong radiation about her. She was kind and loving, there were no traces of the mannerisms that are so typical of other celebrities, because she has none. I still couldn't believe she was really there within an arm's reach from me. At the beginning of our conversation I handed her the present. She said thank you, but before opening it she asked me what made her worthy of this present. This was the point when I could tell her what I'd been meaning to tell her for a long time. "Your beauty and the fact that you are very honest about what you do and that you had the courage to venture into this even though you knew that most people are jealous and mean, so you are going to be subjected to malicious and unfair remarks. This present is also the sign of my respect". Laci was translating to her and Ewa looked me in the eyes several times, I caught a few of her glances and as Laci was getting to the end of the sentence she was smiling more and more, and I could see some inexplicable joy and deep emotion in her eyes. At the end of the sentence she stepped up to me and... and HUGGED ME. Yes, Polish people do not like kissing each other on the cheeks, as they consider it superficial. For them a hug is a lot more intimate way of saying thank you. While she was hugging me I could feel her scent. It was not some perfume, it was something else, her unique scent, something really refined that really suited her. Then Ewa unwrapped the present and removed it from its box. I will not forget that expression on her face as long as I live. I could see genuine pleasure and happiness on her face, which you cannot fake. And I'm really grateful to Marci for capturing that moment with my camera. Phill put my present together for her and plugged it into a socket to make it light up. That made Ewa even more pleased and emotional, she really liked my gift. She talked for about a minute trying to tell me how happy she was about it and how moved she was. Then there was a brief conversation, which basically was still about Ewa trying to tell me how pleased she was to meet me and how she appreciated us travelling there from another country just to see her. It was interesting, that I tried to ask her a few questions in English, which she understood but she answered them in Polish. I handed her a printed message from my friend, Brian from San Francisco, then I asked her for an autograph and we were photographed together. Ewa was very helpful, she was always eager to grant my wishes. She asked me how I wanted the photographs and where I wanted her to write her autograph. There was a funny incident when I wanted a photo with Phill, Ewa and me on it, but Phill declined it, saying: "Oh no, no I am not important. I am just Mr. Nobody." As I wanted to surprise Brian, I asked Ewa what she thought about phoning him. She was pleased to do that, so we stepped aside to the emergency exit of the club, where it was far more quiet, I dialled Brian's number, then I handed over the phone to Ewa. It would have been interesting to see Brian's face when he answered the phone and heard a pleasant female voice chirping from a distance of about 10 000 kilometres: "Hallo Brian , jestem Ewa Sonnet.". While they were talking, I took a few pictures of Ewa, then started chatting with Phill. He is a really nice, outgoing man, and he was very pleased to meet us Hungarians. We asked him where the name Phill came from, since it is obviously not a Polish one. He explained and he also talked about his family, which makes it unnecessary for me to go on about what a nice and friendly guy he is, and he felt the same way about us. After Ewa finished telephoning (if this phone of mine ever breaks down, I will definitely not throw it away...) we chatted for a few more minutes, and she kept emphasising how moved she was and how pleased she was to see us. She often repeated the phrase "Dziękuję bardzo!" i.e. "Thank you very much." She kindly invited us to her next show in Katowice on Wednesday, which we were very sorry to turn down, however Phill offered , to help us organise another meeting if we let him know in advance when we were coming again.
It was nearly time to say goodbye and this time Ewa hugged not just me but all four of us, but I got the longest hug. While saying farewell Phill mentioned, that now he understood, why the Poles and the Hungarians got on so well. Laci cited for him the old, well-known saying: "Poles and Hungarians are good friends, they fight and drink their wine together." In Polish: "Polak, Wegier, dwa bratanki, I do szabli, i do szklanki." In literal translation this means: Poles and Hungarians are brothers to the sword and to the glass. "I hope we'll have a chance to taste some wine when we meet again", Phill answered with an expressive smile.
As we were leaving, I turned round after a few steps and walked backwards, and we were waving to each other until there was a turn in the corridor.
It was pouring with rain outside. We headed home at around 3:45am. In the car I was sitting silently for a long time, staring at the raindrops hitting the windscreen. I couldn't believe I actually had met Ewa Sonnet. She was just like I had thought she would be: extremely nice, sincere, smiling, a bit shy, modest, very friendly, yet mysterious, really like an angel on Earth. I relived every moment of our meeting in my mind, and I was hoping this was not the last time, and I will get another chances to meet and speak to the most beautiful woman in the world.
PS.: I did not know at that time, but we met again after a month....
